Teeth cleaning (scaling and polish)
Regular Teeth Cleanings are an important part of good oral hygiene. They include scaling and polish.
Dental Scaling is the removal of bacterial plaque, tartar and stain from the teeth above and below the gum line. This is important to have done on a regular basis to help maintain the health of your mouth. Scaling will help reverse and/or prevent gum disease. Plaque starts to accumulate on our teeth just minutes after brushing. After a period of time, the plaque then becomes calcified and turns into the hard calcium deposits. These deposits exist above and below the gumline. This becomes a nuisance because it has a rough texture to it which attracts more plaque to the area. The bacteria found in the plaque affects our gum and bone health and can cause gum disease. Gum disease is the number one risk factor of tooth loss in adults.
Dental Polishing removes plaque and stain from the tooth surface. Polishing is affective on staining that is located on the surface of the teeth. Teeth stain can be caused by many of the rich coloured foods we eat and drink. Some examples are red wine, coffee, tea, some fruit, tomato sauce and more. Tobacco products also cause staining of our teeth. These stains are easily removed with one of the following options.
We offer 2 methods of stain removal;
- We use an oscillating rubber cup and some abrasive paste to the areas of stain.
- We use slurry of sodium bicarbonate and water through an air polisher.
Both ways are affective ways of removing the staining on the surface of our teeth. If youíre concerned about the general colour of your teeth, visit our teeth whitening section of this website. Professional whitening might be a good option for you!
We use Oraqix “Needle Free” anesthetic.
With Oraqix you’ll experience scaling with no pain. We dispense a gel under your gums which takes effect after 30 seconds. For the next 20 minutes we’ll be able to scale your teeth and you won’t feel any pain at all!
The best part is that unlike the “freezing, numbness” that you may have experienced with a needle anesthetic Oraqix will leave you feeling normal.
This may not be feasible in some cases.
